Services marking Lent to begin

LENT, THE CHRISTIAN season of denial and contemplation, begins Wednesday, and churches in Linthicum and Ferndale have scheduled services in observance of the season:

Linthicum Heights United Methodist Church, 200 School Lane, will offer ashes at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Holly Run Chapel and a service in the sanctuary at 7: 30 p.m. Potluck suppers are scheduled at 6: 30 p.m. Feb. 19 and 26, with services at 7: 30 p.m. A variety of sacred music will be presented Feb. 19 by Otis and Karen Stroup. Mat Merker will give a slide presentation Feb. 26 on the Zaire Mission.

St. Philip Neri Roman Catholic Church, 6405 Orchard Road, will distribute ashes during Masses at 6: 15 a.m., 9 a.m., 12: 15 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Ash Wednesday. Lenten Masses are offered at 6: 30 a.m., 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 6: 30 am. and 9 a.m. Fridays; 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturdays; and 8 a.m., 9: 30 a.m., 11 a.m., 12: 30 a.m. and 5 p.m., Sundays.

Ferndale United Methodist Church, 117 Ferndale Road, will have a brief service at 7 p.m. Wednesday that will include distribution of ashes.

St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 118 Marydel Road, will have Ash Wednesday services at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. services.

On subsequent Wednesdays during Lent, St. Christopher's will have potluck dinners at 5: 30 p.m., Lenten classes at 6: 15 p.m. and worship services in the sanctuary at 7: 15 p.m.

St. John Lutheran Church, 300 West Maple Road in Linthicum, will have Ash Wednesday services with distribution of ashes at 9 a.m. and 7: 30 p.m. There will be soup-and-sandwich dinners at 6: 30 p.m. Sundays during Lent, followed by worship services in the Fellowship Hall at 7: 30 p.m.

Woman's Club to meet

The Woman's Club of Linthicum Heights will meet at 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday in the clubhouse on Hammonds Ferry Road. The theme will be "Celebrating Our Commitment to the Environment."

Glenn G. Page, watershed restoration director for the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, will be the speaker. Page has been involved with coastal water quality issues for 10 years.

Paper products sought

The Community Health and Volunteer Services Committee for Sarah's House and Hearth House is accepting the donation of paper products. The committee plans to visit Mariner Health, a Glen Burnie nursing home, Friday with refreshments to celebrate Valentine's Day.

Ferndale Roadrunners

The Ferndale Roadrunners will have a meeting at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Ferndale-Linthicum Senior Center on Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard. Dues will be accepted, and members who haven't paid by Saturday will be considered delinquent.

The Roadrunners have some wonderful cooks who shared their talents at a recent covered-dish luncheon, said club member Pete Scott. He said the food was outstanding and that all cooks should be thanked for their contributions.

On April 19, the Roadrunners will take a bus trip to Frederick for a family-style shrimp, ham and turkey dinner. Seats are available.
