Magothy United Methodist Church will brew up a coffeehouse in fellowship hall

THE GROUNDHOG'S prediction of an early spring could not have been more welcome last weekend. So far, we have escaped the tons of snow that Mother Nature dumped on us the past few years, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed and a bag of melting crystals handy. You can never be too sure.

Coffeehouse tonight

Magothy United Methodist Church, 3703 Mountain Road, sponsors a coffeehouse from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today in its fellowship hall.

Performers include the Matt Kuhn Trio, Glorybound Singers, Chuck Holmes and Friends, Rupert Hall male chorus, Jeremiah Wentz and Justin Clulow.

Admission is free. Light refreshments will be served.

Basketball night

Chesapeake High School Athletic Boosters is sponsoring Lake Shore Basketball Night at 5: 30 p.m. today in the school gym.

All youngsters attending the games dressed in a Lake Shore basketball uniform will get in free and receive a hot dog. Admission for parents and others is $3.

The boys and girls Cougar teams will play Glen Burnie High School's Gopher teams.

Craft fair

Shop for Valentine and spring decorating items and gifts at Magothy Cooperative Nursery School's annual craft fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow at Magothy United Methodist Church, 3703 Mountain Road.

Craft workers will offer handmade items for sale. A variety of baked goods will also be available.

Proceeds will benefit the nursery school program.

Souper Saturday

A soup to satisfy every taste will be available at Jenkins Memorial Church's Souper Saturday dinner from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow at the church, 133 Riviera Drive in Riviera Beach.

Homemade soups on the menu include clam chowder, chicken noodle, potato, shrimp gumbo, vegetable crab, vegetable beef, chili, pea and navy bean, served with bread, crackers, beverage and dessert.

Admission is $5.50 for adultsand $2 for children older than 5. Children younger than 5 eat for free.

Crafts and baked goods also will be available.

Sportfishing presentation

The Pasadena Sportfishing Group will meet at 7: 30 p.m. Monday at the Orchard Beach fire hall on Solley Road.

Bradley Powers, director of the state Department of Aquaculture, will give a slide presentation on fish farming in the state.

Members of the Orchard Beach Volunteer Fire Company will sell hot platters, sandwiches and beverages, starting at 6 p.m.

Membership in the sportfishing group is free and open to anglers of all ages.

Shrove Tuesday supper

The United Methodist Men of Community United Methodist Church, 8680 Fort Smallwood Road, will sponsor their annual Shrove Tuesday pancake supper from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the fellowship hall.

The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12.

Pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, applesauce, orange juice and coffee will be served.

The church also will hold an adult fellowship dinner and dance with a disc jockey from 6: 30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Feb. 15 in the hall.

Meats and beverages will be provided, but guests should bring a salad or vegetable dish to share.

Bull and oyster roast

The Kiwanis Club of Mountain Road are sponsoring a bull and oyster roast fund-raiser from 7: 30 p.m. to midnight March 15 at Kurtz's Beach. Tickets are $22.

Proceeds will be used to help pay for club community activities, including scholarships for graduating seniors at Northeast and Chesapeake high schools, an essay contest for local fifth-graders, programs for the disabled and elderly, and a hospital equipment loaner program for needy patients. Childbirth classes

Harbor Hospital Center will offer childbirth education classes from 7 p.m. to 9: 30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays Feb. 17 through March 26 at Helix HealthPark on Ritchie Highway south of Jumper's Hole Road.

The cost of the six-week class is $65.

Certified childbirth educators will instruct expectant mothers and their coaches on the Lamaze method of labor and delivery, Caesarean sections, postpartum care and the care of newborn babies.
