County athletes get ready to rumble Relay event is warmup for region, state meets

Sam Singleton of Oakland Mills doesn't so much coach his team during the Howard County Relays as he watches. That's because he lets his athletes pick their events and select their teams.

And should things not go as planned, Singleton has an out. "They can't blame it on the coach because I didn't have anything to do with it," he said, smiling.

The relays event serves two purposes. First, it is the "snow day" if the county indoor championships are postponed because of bad weather. Secondly, and how it was yesterday at Baltimore's 5th Regiment Armory, it is a fun meet, where top and average athletes meet in a non-pressurized situation. No team scores are kept.

"We're here to have fun, to lighten things up before regions and states," said Atholton's Cian Oatts, the Howard County champion in the 55 and 300 dashes. Yesterday, Oatts helped the Raiders to victory in the 400.

Atholton, Glenelg, Hammond, Howard, Long Reach, Oakland Mills and River Hill will be among 16 teams competing in the 2A-1A Central region meet Friday at the 5th Regiment Armory. The top six finishers advance to the Feb. 19 state meet.

Centennial, Mount Hebron and Wilde Lake will join 11 other schools in the 3A-2A West region Saturday at Hagerstown Junior College. The 3A-2A state meet is Feb. 20.

Oakland Mills shot putter Andrew Long had a personal indoor best of 47-10 yesterday. Long won the county meet last week with a toss of 44-10.

Long Reach coach Pete Hughes was pleased with his team's showing, and even happier to "get out without any injuries. With the region coming up Friday, that was my biggest concern."
