A car chase through Glen Burnie and Millersville Sunday afternoon ended when the driver crashed the car into a pole at a Millersville shopping center and ran behind the stores, where police caught him.

Shawn Marcel Cross, 26, of the 8200 block of Millfield Court was charged with auto theft and driving with a suspended license.

Officers Michael Belcher and Eric Gennett were in a patrol car on Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard near Dorsey Road shortly before 4 p.m. when they saw a 1992 Chevrolet that had just been reported stolen.

After the officers tried to pull the car over, the driver sped onto southbound Interstate 97 with the officers chasing him, onto New Cut Road and south again on Veterans Highway.

Meanwhile, other officers set up a roadblock at Veterans Highway and Old Mill Road, police said. The driver cut through the Northway Shopping Center parking lot and hit a pole in front of Metro Food Market.

The driver got out of the car and ran behind the shopping center with police in pursuit. He pulled a handgun from his waistband and dropped it as he saw police closing in, then jumped a short fence into the Cloverleaf Business Park, police said. Officers caught him a short distance away before he reached a second, taller fence, police said.

Officers recovered the handgun, a loaded Smith & Wesson.
