Morgan State women hold off Coppin, 70-66

Just when Coppin State thought it had Morgan State's number in women's basketball, the Bears reversed the momentum.

Loser of three games to Coppin last season, two during the regular season and one in the Mister Cookie Face Holiday Classic, Morgan decisioned the visiting Eagles last night, 70-66, at Hill Field House.

The victory moved Morgan (9-8) into a third-place tie with Maryland-Eastern Shore in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, both with 6-3 records. Coppin (4-12, 4-5) is fifth.

"This was big," said Morgan's first-year coach, Darcel Estep. "We're fighting to stay in the MEAC's top tier. The kids really wanted this for pride and gutted it out."

The game was just as emotionally draining for Coppin. The Eagles kept it close the entire way -- tied at halftime at 33 and with 11: 57 left at 43. Coppin inched within 68-66 with 23 seconds remaining on back-to-back three-pointers by sophomore Danielle Scott, who had only one in her career previously.

"I feel so badly for the girls," Coppin coach Tori Harrison said. "People don't realize they're in the locker room crying. This was a very important game."

Coppin's 6-foot senior center, Julelah Fuller, the daughter of Morgan men's coach Chris Fuller, made her second start of the season and matched her career high with 11 points.

No, no, said Dad, who's in his second year at Morgan, Julelah isn't showing a lack of loyalty by attending Coppin. Julelah was recruited several years before he left Erie Community College in Buffalo for Morgan. She was recruited by Melvin Smith, then the Coppin women's assistant coach and now Fuller's assistant.

"One reason I started her was because this is her dad's school," Harrison said. "Also, we needed production from different people, and we got it from Julelah."

Produce she did. Coming into the game, her scoring average was 2.5 points.
