WMC planning black history events Lineup includes drama, discussion of Ebonics

Western Maryland College will offer activities throughout February in recognition of Black History Month, including a panel discussion on the introduction of Ebonics, or black English, as a recognized language in some areas of the country.

Also featured is "Reflections," a one-person dramatic performance by Michelle Banks about her experiences as a black deaf woman. The celebration starts tomorrowwith African American Appreciation Day beginning at 11 a.m. in Ensor Lounge.

Events are open to the public, and are sponsored by the Black Student Union, the College Activities Programming Board and the Office of Multicultural Student Services. All activities are free, unless otherwise indicated.

Feb. 11: Panel discussion on "Ebonics: Perspectives on Black English," 7 p.m., McDaniel Lounge.

Feb. 12: Movie, "Higher Learning," 9 p.m., the Pub, Decker Center.

Feb. 13: Brown-bag luncheon discussion of "Higher Learning," 11: 40 a.m., Gold Room B.

Feb. 15: "Steppin' Back to Africa," featuring area chapters of black fraternities and sororities, 7 p.m., Alumni Hall, party 10 p.m. to 1: 30 a.m. Tickets are $10, $5 with student identification.

Feb. 17: Soul food dinner, 7 p.m., Forum, Decker Center. Tickets are $7, $4 with student ID.

Feb. 19: An original performance of jazz and gospel featuring WMC's Glen Caldwell and Eric Byrd, 7 p.m., Levine Hall.

Feb. 21: Movie, to be announced, Decker Auditorium.

Feb. 22: Gospel Jubilee with choirs from Westminster and Baltimore, 7 p.m., Baker Chapel.

Feb. 23: Trip to Great Blacks in Wax Museum. Information: Diane Drakes, 857-2759.

Feb. 26: "Reflections" with Michelle Banks, 8 p.m., Forum, Decker Center.

Feb. 28: Night of Atonement, an evening of unity and empowerment celebrating black heritage, 7 p.m., BSU Clubroom.
