Herb Caen, 80, the Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist who for six decades chronicled San Francisco with wit, wisdom and gossip, died yesterday of cancer.

He wrote sporadically to the end despite failing health. His daily collection of local news, gossip and jokes amused millions of readers. Last year he received a Pulitzer Prize for his "extraordinary contribution as a voice and a conscience of his city."
