Stuart B. Kaufman,54, a University of Maryland professor, author and expert on the U.S. labor movement, died of a heart attack Jan. 19 in Garrett Park, Montgomery County. He edited the papers of labor leader Samuel Gompers, who helped establish the American Federation of Labor (AFL) in 1886 and was its president for 37 years. He also wrote a book about Gompers and the federation's origins.
