Firefighter injured while fighting blaze

A Mount Airy firefighter was injured early yesterday while assisting Frederick authorities at a house fire in the 13000 block of Jesse Smith Road.

Jeffrey Shippey, 24, was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was treated for smoke inhalation and released, authorities said.

After a school bus driver and neighbors reported the 8: 30 a.m. blaze, some 50 firefighters had it under control within 20 minutes. Also assisting were units from Howard and Montgomery counties.

William Joseph Busche, the 49-year-old owner of the wood-and-brick ranch home, attempted to extinguish the fire with water. He was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

Damage to the house and its contents was estimated at $100,000. The state fire marshal listed the cause as accidental, due to an unattended kettle.

Poem by Woodbine man is published in anthology

John W. Stem Jr. of Woodbine has had a poem published in "Lyrical Heritage," a treasury of poetry compiled by the National Library of Poetry in Owings Mills.

The poem, titled "if i were me," focused on people's convictions. He has been writing poetry for more than 10 years, centering on theology and biblical themes.
