Santilli takes 4 firsts at Top Flight River Hill junior puts up strong times in all events

Beth Santilli competed in four events in Friday's Top Flight Meet at the Fifth Regiment Armory in Baltimore. Not surprisingly, the River Hill junior came away with four first places.

"All her performances were really strong," said River Hill girls coach Norm Belden.

Santilli won the 800 meters (2 minutes, 26.8 seconds), 1,600 (5: 22), 3,200 (12: 20) and joined Jennifer Pla, Stephanie Willet and Kelli Bloch to win the 3,200 relay in 10: 41.9.

Atholton's Cian Oates and Glenelg's Luke Reinke were double winners. Team scores were not kept.

"This meet helps you know what you have to do [to improve] and how you stand in the county," said Glenelg's Chris Selmer, who finished first in the 500, second in the 300 and fourth in the 800.

Here's how each team fared:

Atholton -- Oates left the meet early because he didn't feel well, but not before winning the 55 (6.6) and 300 (38.8). Mike Eshoo and Alex Buell finished first and third, respectively, in the pole vault at 13 feet and 11-6. Nick Barresi was second in the two-mile (10: 45) and Mike Zaron was second in the mile (4: 51) and second in the 500 (1: 14). Ryan Moore was second in the high jump (5-10) and Jason Green third in the 800 (2: 13). The two-mile relay team of Jason Green, Todd Swartzwelder, Luke Kim and Jeff Bailey won in 8: 56. Tanisha Chester won the pole vault at 8-6, and Michelle Nelson was fourth in the 55 (7.5).

Centennial -- Jon Thompson finished second in the 55 (6.7), third in the 300 (39.2) and anchored the 800-meter relay team (Ben Cosgrove, twins Marcus and Steve Jones) that finished second. Jeff Olenick took first in the 3,200 (10: 07.7), Cosgrove was first in the 55 hurdles (8.3), Ryan Smith won the high jump (5-10) and Dave Johnson was second in the pole vault (12-6). Steve Gerhard finished second in the shot put (36 1/2 ). The 1,600-meter relay team of Johnson, Cosgrove and the Jones twins won with a time of 3: 55. Elly Tsai finished second in the high jump (4-8) and Sarah Ordaz was third in the 3,200 (12: 43). Kristy Mitroka won the shot put (32-2 1/4 ) and twin sister Kathy was third (29-11 1/4 ).

Glenelg -- Chris Selmer won the 500 in 1: 12.8, finished second in the 300 in 39.1 and fourth in the 800 in 2: 13.7. Luke Reinke had two firsts -- the 1,600 in 4: 43.6 and 800 in 2: 09. The boys 4 x 800 relay team (Selmer, Sanjay Pant, Jason Habert, Brian Selmer) was third in 9: 13.2. Christa Vent won the high jump at 4-10, finished fifth in the 500 in 1: 32.2 and was a member -- along with Mandy Miller, Lori Tvarkunas and Melissa Wilder -- of the 4 x 200 relay team that finished second in 1: 57.2. Tvarkunas was second in the pole vault at 8 feet, and Miller was fourth at 6-6. Amanda Strandquist was fifth in the 55 hurdles in 10.1, Meggan Brown was third in the 1,600 in 5: 57.5 and fifth in the 3,200 in 13: 19. Leigh Bender was fourth in the 800 in 2: 41.9 and sixth in the 1,600 in 6: 03. Kristin Smith tied for third in the high jump at 4-8.

Hammond -- Jeff Jones tied for second in the 55 hurdles (8.4). Matt Albritton finished third in the 55 (6.7) and fourth in the 300 (39.5). Ryan Maxey was fourth in the shot put (33-6). The 4 x 200 relay team of Albritton, Jeff Jones, Richard Bright and Kirk Henlon finished third (1: 42.7). Brita Grothe was second in the 55 hurdles (9.4) and Meg Tilley second in the mile (5: 55.8).

Howard -- Coleen Parker was fifth in the 500 (1: 27.7), then sprained her right ankle colliding with a teammate on a hand-off in the 4 x 200 relay. Coach Tony Holland expects Parker to be back for the National Guard meet Jan. 18. Jevne Reid took sixth in the 500 (1: 28.8), Tiffany Ferrell was fourth (29-1) in the shot put, and Jana Grant was fourth in the 55 (7.7). Brian Carey was fourth in the shot put at 34 feet.

Long Reach -- Freshman Teyarnte Carter won the 55 (7.2) and was fourth in the 300 (44.6). Thema Napier finished first in the 500 (1: 26), second in the 800 (2: 30) and third in the 300 (44.6). Cindy Maxfield took third in the 55 hurdles (9.7). Willie Bhatia was second in the 500 (1: 13), James Stewart third in the 55 (6.7) and Trevor Randall second in the 55 hurdles (8.4). The relay team of Bhatia, Randall, Stewart and Keith Loudermill won the 800 (1: 40.1) and finished second in the 1,600 (3: 58.3).

Mount Hebron -- Kate Frande and Sheri Hyson finished second and fourth, respectively, in the 3,200 with times of 12: 35 and 12: 56. Frande and Hyson combined with Berit Wegner and Julie Broden to finish third in the 4 x 800 with a time of 10: 54. Ladan Fakory unofficially broke the school record of 7.7 in the 55 by finishing sixth in 7.6. Gauti Johannesson, hurt in the county cross country championships, finished sixth in the 3,200 in 11: 25. Robby Graham was fifth in the 300 in 39.6.

Oakland Mills -- Amber Day won the 300 (44.1) and finished second in the 55 (7.5). Distance runner Kristin Sunderdick also ran well. Justin Herron won the shot put with a toss of 36-10 3/4 .

River Hill -- In addition to Santilli's four-event performance, Stephanie Willet was second in the 500 (1: 27.26) and Muneca Slade had a personal best of 28-3 for sixth place in the shot put. Gena Courpas also had a personal best in the 300 (49.52). Tim Gilday improved 2 feet and finished fourth in the pole vault (10-6).

Wilde Lake -- Ben Coffman was second in the 800 (2: 11) and fifth in the mile (5: 06.2) and Aaron Blum finished third in the 500 (1: 13.9) and sixth in the 800 (2: 14). Nkem Ohia was fifth in the 500 (1: 15.4) and Duane Kerr fifth in the 300 (39.6). Nyjla Littlejohn won the 55 hurdles (8.6), was second in the 300 (44.3) and third in the 55 (7.4). Julie Bergin tied for third in the high jump (4-8) and Tolika Wilson was second in the shot put (31-6 1/4 ).
