Westminster family escapes townhouse fire Friday

December 29, 1996

A Westminster family of four escaped a fire that heavily damaged their two-story townhouse in the 800 block of Ewing Drive early Friday, state fire marshals said.

George Makoutz, the homeowner, suffered minor burns on the arms as he tried unsuccessfully to save the family pets, two dogs and a cat.

Fire marshals said that about 60 volunteers from Union Bridge, Pleasant Valley, Hampstead, Winfield and Westminster brought the 4: 21 a.m. blaze under control within 30 minutes. Damage was estimated at $75,000. The cause of the fire, which began in the living room, is under investigation.
