Sister Kathryn A. Caufield, 76, teacher

Sister Kathryn Ann Caufield, a School Sister of Notre Dame who taught at local Catholic schools, died Wednesday of a respiratory ailment at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson. She was 76.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she professed her vows in 1940. A graduate of the College of Notre Dame, she was given the religious name of Sister Dionyse, but in later years used her given name.

Sister Kathryn Ann began teaching in 1943 at Notre Dame of Maryland, now Notre Dame Preparatory School. She later taught at the Cathedral School, and at St. Pius X in Rodgers Forge, St. Joseph's in Taneytown and at St. John's in Frederick. She also taught in Malden, Mass., Harrisburg, Pa., and Fort Lee, N.J.

In 1983 she took up residence at Villa Assumpta, and volunteered at what was then St. Joseph Hospital.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. today at Villa Assumpta, 6401 N. Charles St.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.
