Germantown Academy (Pa.) hit 35 of 45 foul shots to post an 80-76 victory over fourth-ranked Lake Clifton and advance in one bracket of the Slam Dunk to the Beach Tournament at Cape Henlopen High in Lewes, Del., yesterday.
Lake Clifton (5-2), which made just seven of 21 free throws, was led by senior guard Kevin Braswell's 18 points. Senior forward Michael King, and junior forward Rodney Bass, each scored 15.
Lake Clifton will play in a consolation game tomorrow against Mercersburg Academy (Pa.) or Trotwood-Madison (Ohio).
Southwestern 113, Carver 42: Sabers junior guard Cornelius McMurray led all scorers with 22 points, and senior forward Jerome Banks added 21 as host and third-ranked Southwestern (5-0) won in the first round of the Henderson Neal Tournament.
The Sabers advance to today's championship at 2 p.m. against Northwestern, a 67-64 winner over Northern in the other semifinal.
South Carroll 45, Glenelg 41: The 13th-ranked Cavaliers needed a 25-9 fourth-quarter run and 12 points from senior guard Lindsay Vosloh to survive the first round of the Frederick Community College Christmas Tournament.
Senior forward Courtney Butler added 10 points for the Cavs (4-2). Glenelg senior guard Lauren Brown had 14 points.
Meade 79, River Hill 59: Angie Creek and Dena Eldridge scored 18 points apiece to lead No. 18 Meade (5-1) over visiting River Hill (2-4) in the first round of the Athletic Warehouse Holiday Tournament.
The Mustangs will meet Northern-Calvert in today's championship at 3 p.m.
