County police arrested a Severn man Wednesday on charges of hitting a former roommate in the head with a hammer during an argument at a Crofton home.

Matthew Joseph Smith, 30, of the 2200 block of Davidsonville Road was treated at Anne Arundel Medical Center for cuts to his head and released.

Police said a man went to Smith's home to get clothes he left there before moving out. Smith stood in the doorway and argued with the man until he slapped Smith in the face, police said.

The man pulled out a hammer and hit Smith twice on the head with the claw end, police said.

The man ran away as Smith went into the house, got a shotgun and fired one round into the air, police said.

The man went to a nearby 7-Eleven and called police.

Officers found the hammer allegedly used in the assault near the 7-Eleven.

Police arrested Nathaniel Brown, 52, of the 8400 block of New Cut Road and charged him with first- and second- degree assault.

Odenton youth beaten in robbery attempt

Four people beat an Odenton youth Tuesday during an unsuccessful robbery attempt near his home, county police said.

Norman E. Mann III, 16, told police he was walking in the 400 block of Bruce St. in Odenton shortly after 9 p.m. when a white car pulled up.

The driver and a woman -- both wearing masks -- got out, grabbed the youth and began punching and kicking him, police said.

Two passengers got out of the back seat and joined the attack, police said.

The assailants went through the youth's pockets, but the youth broke away and ran home before they got anything, police said.
