A fire that started yesterday morning in mop heads stored too close to a furnace caused about $5,000 in damage to the Dora Mack Carter Christian Center in the 7500 block of Oakland Mills Road, county firefighters said.

The fire was discovered about 7: 05 a.m. yesterday by a parishioner who had just arrived to begin the breakfast program. The fire, which caused no structural damage, was not expected to alter scheduling for this morning's services.
