Fall kills county inmate at work-release job site in Va.

A Howard County Detention Center inmate died Friday afternoon after falling several stories through a shaft onto a concrete pad while working at a job site in Virginia.

Kevin Anthony Barnes, 33, of the 4700 block of Captain Bain Drive in Upper Marlboro died at 2: 59 p.m. at the Washington Hospital Center.

Barnes, who was serving an 18- month sentence, was working for Magco Roofing Co. of Jessup through a jail work-release program.

Barnes was the first county jail inmate to die at a work-release job site, jail officials said.
