Kelly Gruber file

December 20, 1996

Data: Third baseman, outfielder; bats right, throws right; age 34. Statistically speaking: Gruber played in only 18 games for California in 1993, three years after hitting 31 homers and driving in 118 runs for the Toronto Blue Jays. He hasn't played the last three seasons because of injuries.

Pluses: He always has been a terrific athlete -- he is the only baseball player ever to win the "Superstars" competition -- and, according to those who have seen him work out, he's in great shape.

Minuses: Obviously, he has a lot of rust to wipe off his game, and he must be patient. It could take him some time to get back to being ready to compete at the major-league level.

X-factor: His level of frustration. Gruber may have high expectations for himself, and if he comes back slowly, he may have to be willing to go to the minors for some fine-tuning.
