Merchants urged to ask for health officer IDs Woman reportedly lied, seeking food discounts

Carroll health officials are asking local merchants to request photo identification cards from anyone claiming to represent the Health Department, after reports that a woman misrepresented herself to local food establishments as a department employee.

Merchants at Cranberry Mall in Westminster informed the health department that a woman visited food establishments there on Dec. 15, requesting discounts because of her position with the Health Department, said the acting county health officer, Larry L. Leitch.

"We would like the public, especially merchants, to know that Health Department employees do not ask for product discounts connected to their employment," he said.

Leitch said merchants described the woman as about 35, short, with blond hair and having two children with her.

He urged merchants who are suspicious of anyone claiming to work for the Health Department to ask for a photo identification or call the department at (410) 876-4972 for verification.
