CHRISTMAS is officially here when Santa arrives atop an Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Company fire engine.

Santa's journey takes him east of Ritchie Highway to West Pasadena tomorrow; west of Ritchie Highway and east of Jumpers Hole on Sunday; and west of Jumpers Hole on Monday.

"All of this depends on how many calls we receive and the weather," cautions Robert Ganz Jr., fire company president.

"One year, the tree branches were hanging so low with ice, we knocked Santa right off the engine," he remembers. Thank goodness, Santa wasn't hurt.

Luminaria kits

It's not too late to order luminaria kits from the Severna Park Optimist Club. Orders will be taken through Monday, and, if you live in the county, the kits will be delivered to your door.

Kits contain one dozen candles, white paper bags and sand. They are $6 each, or three kits for $15.

To order, call Ray Robertson, 987-4135, or Jim Hubbard, 647-6966.

The Optimists are known for their commitment to young people. They sponsor annual essay and speech competitions and send students to leadership and citizenship seminars.

On Nov. 12, more than 40 area teens were honored at the Optimists' 17th annual Youth Recognition Banquet at Fort Meade.

The juniors and seniors from Archbishop Spalding, Old Mill and Severna Park high schools and the Severn School were nominated by their schools, churches, community groups and individuals as excellent representatives of today's youth.

"The Severna Park Optimists began this project to counteract the negative impression being created by a handful of troubled young people as an affirmation of what is so right with the young people in our community," said Robertson, club spokesman.

About 140 guests heard Nick Nuzzo, midshipman brigade commander at the Naval Academy, deliver the keynote address. He and club president Jim Williams presented certificates of achievement to the honorees.
