Two men have been charged with attempted murder and other offenses after an incident Tuesday in which a Baltimore police officer exchanged gunfire with two men he had seen rob a woman and assault her 8-year-old son in Southwest Baltimore, police said yesterday.

Police said Willie Campbell, 28, of the 800 block of W. Lexington St. and Joseph Lee Collins, 46, of the 500 block of N. Gilmor St. were charged with robbery, attempted murder of a police officer and handgun violations. They were being held at the Central Booking and Intake Facility.

Officer Mark Haywood, who was off duty, saw the robbery in the 1300 block of Hollins St.

He was shot at by one of the robbers and shot one of them, police said.

Police said Campbell was shot in the buttocks and left wrist. He was treated at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center and released.
