Howard County police are investigating a two-car collision Monday night in Ellicott City, caused, police say, when a Woodbine man drove into on-coming traffic.

Ronald Bernard Carter, 58, of the 1700 block of Daisy Road was westbound on Rogers Avenue near Orchard Avenue about 9 p.m. when his 1990 Cadillac crossed the center line and drove into the path of an eastbound 1989 Chevrolet van, a police report said.

When the vehicles collided, Carter's car rolled down a small embankment into a wooded area south of Rogers Avenue, police said.

Carter was taken to Maryland's Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was listed in critical but stable condition yesterday, a hospital spokesman said.

The driver of the Chevrolet van, Robert E. Lee Hodges III, 49, of the 2400 block of Sunset Farm Road in Ellicott City, and two juveniles in the van were not injured.
