Report card PANTHERS 27, RAVENS 16

December 16, 1996

Running backs

Bam Morris did double duty, gaining 89 yards on 22 carries and catching five passes for 44 yards, a lot of the receptions in the flat. Morris is becoming one of the team's most consistent performers. -- B+

Quarterback

Vinny Testaverde completed 20 of 37 passes and moved fairly well in the pocket. But there were times when he should have gotten rid of the ball, and other times when he stood too flatfooted waiting for receivers to clear. -- C

Receivers

Michael Jackson had a decent game with five catches, but he was the only bona fide receiver to make a contribution as far as receptions. Tight end Brian Kinchen played well, leading the Ravens with six catches for 87 yards. -- C-

Offensive line

Playing against one of the best defensive groups in the league, the Ravens cleared some nice holes up front. The Panthers had four sacks, but two were Testaverde's fault. -- C+

Defensive line

Defensive end Anthony Pleasant got a couple of hurries on quarterback Kerry Collins, but the Ravens didn't mount much of a pass rush and didn't stop the Panthers' run when it counted. -- C-

Linebackers

Considering the injuries, the players in this group hung tough for a half, but they were out of position and outclassed in the second half. -- C

Secondary

This unit continues to improve every week. Carolina had only one real big play, with receiver Mark Carrier catching a pass for 26 yards. -- C

Special teams

Matt Stover kicked three field goals and Greg Montgomery punted four times for a 45.0-yard average. The Ravens also covered well on kickoff and punt returns. -- B
