Larry Gates, 81, an Emmy award-winning character actor whose career spanned 50 years in films, theater and television, died Thursday in Sharon, Conn. He played H. B. Lewis in the soap opera "The Guiding Light," for which he won an Emmy. Among his film credits were "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" and "In the Heat of the Night."

Dr. Martin Humphrey Moynihan, 68, an authority on animal behavior who built the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama into a world-class scientific center, died of lung cancer Dec. 3 in Albi, France.
