Homeless man charged in Severna Park break-ins

December 11, 1996

County police arrested a homeless man Monday and charged him with breaking into three Severna Park homes.

Joseph L. Baumgarten, 24, was charged with first-degree burglary, felony theft and destruction of property.

Police were called to a house in the 100 block of Sherburn Road in Oakleigh Forest about 10: 45 a.m. because of a break-in. Officers found the front door kicked in and a man on the second floor ransacking bedrooms.

Police arrested the man and found coins and jewelry. Joan Berning of the Sherburn Road address said some of the coins and jewelry were hers.

Police later received calls from residents in the first block of Emerson Road and the 100 block of Quinn Road who said their front doors had been kicked in, their homes ransacked, and jewelry, cash, and coins taken.

The residents identified items found in possession of the suspect in the Sherburn Road break-in as theirs, police said.
