State police have obtained an arrest warrant for a former Mount Airy resident whom they suspect in the robbery of the NationsBank branch office in Mount Airy on Friday.

The suspect, William D. Irby, was released from a Montgomery County jail Thursday, Tfc. William Corun of the Maryland State Police barracks in Westminster said yesterday.

"From information obtained at the scene and from what witnesses told us, we knew who we were looking for," Corun said. "We just haven't found him yet."

The bank robbery was the fourth this year in the southwest Carroll County town, according to police records.

George L. Gray, 30, of Baltimore faces charges of twice robbing Frederick County National Bank in the 400 block of E. Ridge- ville Blvd., on May 18 and on Oct. 16.

The Carroll County Bank and Trust Co. branch office at the Twin Arch Shopping Center was robbed Aug. 28 by two men who had been robbing banks in the Washington area, state police said.

"It's convenient to rob a bank in Mount Airy because Interstate 70 is so close for a quick getaway," Corun said.

In Friday's robbery, police said, a man entered the branch office on S. Main St. at 5: 05 p.m., pushed his way to a teller's window and demanded money, saying, "Empty your drawer or I'll shoot somebody in the bank."

After an undisclosed amount was put into a plastic bag supplied by the robber, the man left on foot and was seen driving from the area in a dark, older sedan, police said.

Witnesses described the robber as a white man, about 50, 5-feet-8, with a large build, rough and blemished skin, and going bald.

Corun said anyone with information on Irby's whereabouts should call the Westminster barracks at (410) 876-8989 or (410) 876-2101.
