The good life

December 10, 1996

DEMOCRATIC STATE SEN. John A. Pica Jr. is going to miss politics, especially the perks he has grown to love: The lavish meals he consumes and then bills to his campaign treasury; the leased auto he uses, courtesy of his campaign war chest; the cellular phone he bills to his campaign; the elusive "field expenses" and credit card charges.

Mr. Pica of Northeast Baltimore announced quite suddenly that he is leaving the Senate. Whatever his reasons, he could discover that life without a legislative or campaign expense account can be cruel. He may also find he misses other aspects of his job -- such as controlling the city liquor board or doling out senatorial scholarships. Civilian life could be a challenge.
