Mets: Offered salary arbitration to C Brent Mayne, preserving right to negotiate with him through Jan. 8.

Red Sox: Agreed to one-year contract with RHP Mike Maddux.

National Association (NAPBL): Awarded Erie, Pa., and Springfield, Mass., Double-A expansion teams, beginning in 1999. Cities that lost included Austin, Texas, Lexington, Ky., and Springfield, Mo.


Panthers: Acquired LW Craig Fisher from Islanders for future considerations and assigned him to AHL Carolina.

Canucks: Recalled C Lonny Bohonos from AHL Syracuse.


FIFA: Announced Joao Havelange, 80, president since 1974, will retire at end of 1998 World Cup in France.
