Uniformed and undercover state troopers will be watching holiday shoppers at Carroll County malls and shopping centers through Christmas, authorities said.

"We want the public to know that we are adding extra troopers to patrol the malls and their parking lots," said 1st Sgt. Robert Windsor, of the state police barracks in Westminster. "They will be on the lookout for criminals who prey on shoppers, especially during the evening hours."

Shoplifting, theft, robbery and vehicle tampering generally increase during the holiday season, he said.

Lt. Larry Faries, commander of the Westminster barracks, wants troopers to be more visible to deter would-be thieves and others who might take advantage of busy shoppers, Windsor said.

XTC The extra patrols will move randomly throughout the county, making it impossible for anyone to guess where they may show up on a given day, he said.

The mall patrols are in addition to any holiday operation local police agencies and mall security agents may be conducting, he said.
