December 03, 1996

A Linthicum woman was killed and her husband injured yesterday when their car collided with a van at Ritchie Highway and Dover Road, county police said.

Hilda Romaine Hinkle, 81, of the 400 block of Laclair Ave., died in the crash about 12: 20 p.m. Her husband, Eugene Keller Hinkle, 85, was treated for a shoulder injury at North Arundel Hospital and released, police said.

Mr. Hinkle was driving the couple's 1987 Oldsmobile station wagon and was either crossing the highway from Dover Road or changing lanes when he crashed into a 1986 Ford conversion van southbound on Ritchie Highway. The van was driven by James S. Merrill, 60, of the 200 block of Margate Drive, Glen Burnie, police said.

The Ford struck the passenger's side of the Oldsmobile, police said. Merrill and his passenger, William L. Merrill, 53, were not injured. Police said the accident remains under investigation.
