Schools and churches offer Christmas concerts

WITH THANKSGIVING behind us and the mad rush of holiday shopping in full swing, Christmas season is upon us.

The search is on for the perfect gift, the perfect tree and for that elusive Christmas spirit. To help you capture some Christmas spirit and find the true meaning of Christmas, here's a list of holiday concerts and choral programs.

Westminster High School

Westminster High School has several programs to choose from. All concerts will be in the auditorium.

The school jazz ensemble will perform at 7: 30 p.m. Thursday; the concert and symphonic band at 7: 30 p.m. Dec. 10; the orchestra and wind ensemble at 7: 30 p.m. Dec. 12; and the winter choral concert will be presented at 7: 30 p.m. Dec. 19, the day before the students begin their winter break.

Choral Society

Carroll County Choral Society will present its annual Christmas concert at 8 p.m. today and tomorrow. The concert, entitled "Christmas is Forever," will be at Westminster High School. Herb Sell, known locally as "Daddy" Sell, will direct the program with Beverly Wells accompanying. No admission is charged, but a free-will offering will be taken. Information: 549-6827 or 848-9080.

Western Maryland College

Western Maryland College will present several programs to highlight the season. A gospel choir concert will take place in (Big) Baker Memorial Chapel at 7 p.m. Thursday. The sounds of the college choir concert will fill (Big) Baker Memorial Chapel at 7 p.m. Sunday.

The student chamber music presentation will be in (Little) Baker Chapel at 7 p.m. Dec. 9.

The college concert band will perform at 8 p.m. Dec. 14 in Alumni Hall. On Dec. 15, the Western Maryland College Community Orchestra will bring us the season through music at 7 p.m., also in Alumni Hall.

Church Christmas programs

Many area churches will present Christmas music to their congregations and the public.

Ascension Episcopal Church in Westminster has a "Service of Lessons and Carols" planned at 4 p.m. Dec. 22. The service will include anthems, Christmas music by the junior and senior choruses and excerpts from Handel's "Messiah" and Vivaldi's "Gloria."

The Rev. David Duley of Clearfield Bible Church in Westminster said the church has a Christmas Cantata planned for 10: 40 a.m. Dec. 15.

"The church choir will sing a selection of Christmas carols and Scripture and there will be a brief message," he said. Information: 848-1484.

The choir of St. Mary's United Church of Christ in Silver Run will present a Christmas cantata during the 10: 30 a.m. worship hour Dec. 22. This cantata will include many familiar carols.
