Old Mill High School wins 2nd math round

Old Mill High School emerged as the winner in November's second round of the annual county high school math competition at Anne Arundel Community College. The round saw South River High School finish second to remain the year's runner up. Meade High School took third to keep fourth place overall. October's first-round winner, Severna Park High School, fell to sixth this round, but earned enough points to cling to third overall.

Less than a single point separated the top three schools -- Severna Park, South River and Old Mill -- in the first round.

Six students turned in perfect papers in the individual phase of the competition: Steven Calder and Saul Cohen of Old Mill, Daniel Griffie of Northeast, Pat Hooper of Severna Park, Sang Kim of Meade and Joel Young of South River. The third round of the math competition will be Jan. 11 at Anne Arundel Community College. Information: Cathy Hess, assistant professor of mathematics and competition director, 541-2574
