County police arrested a Shady Side man and a Virginia man Tuesday on charges of beating a Harwood man with a pipe at a Shady Side grocery store while yelling racial slurs at him.

Nelson Bravilo Lopez, 19, of the 7200 block of Fairchild Drive in Alexandria, Va., was charged with first-degree assault. Delmar Wayne Sell, Jr., 32, of the 1300 block of Juniper Drive in Shady Side was charged with attempted first-degree assault and second-degree assault.

Chauncey Glen Thompson, Jr., 22, of Harwood was treated for wound to the back of his head at Anne Arundel Medical Center and released.

Witnesses at Reno's Market in the 6100 block of Shady Side Road told police they saw Thompson and another man arguing on the parking lot about 6: 45 p.m. Tuesday.

The man cursed and used a racial slur several times while arguing with Thompson, police said. A second assailant got a pipe from a car and hit Thompson, police said.

While police were taking witness statements, the alleged assailants returned to the store and were arrested.
