A Columbia man accused of fleeing in July when Anne Arundel and Howard police tried to arrest him on rape charges at his parents' home has been picked up in Mount Vernon, Wash.

Sheldon Gary McNeil Jr., 32, of the 5300 block of Brook Way in Wilde Lake village was charged with two counts of first-degree rape, burglary and car theft in Arundel and attempted rape in Howard, police said.

He remains in Skagit County jail awaiting an extradition hearing, Anne Arundel police said yesterday.

Skagit County authorities picked up McNeil about 5 a.m. Tuesday after an officer there noticed a truck with Maryland tags parked in front of a house in Mount Vernon.

The officer checked the tags, discovered that the truck was stolen and found that McNeil was wanted on a car theft charge.

He arrested McNeil at the house.

Arundel police charged McNeil with abducting a 17-year-old Baltimore girl May 17 from an unidentified street corner in Baltimore, taking her to woods off Ridge Road in Hanover and raping her.

He also is charged with picking up a 26-year-old acquaintance on Pennington Avenue in Baltimore on June 20, driving her to woods off Race Road south of Hanover Road and raping her.

Howard County police have charged McNeil with taking a 27-year-old Baltimore woman with whom he was acquainted from a street in Brooklyn to Race Road in Howard County, pulling a knife and trying to rape her.

The woman escaped when a motorist pulled over to help, police said.

McNeil was arrested July 9 in Southwest Baltimore on charges of soliciting sex from a Baltimore police officer.

Anne Arundel police questioned him about the rapes at the time, but released him for lack of evidence.

Three days later, Arundel police received new evidence and went to McNeil's parents' home in Columbia to arrest him. He escaped through the back door, police said.

On July 18, workers at Yowell Equipment and Demolition Co. in the 3200 block of Laurel Fort Meade Road reported the business had been burglarized and a 1991 Chevrolet pickup truck stolen from the premises.

Police took fingerprints from the scene and charged McNeil in a warrant with burglary and auto theft. The truck was recovered in Mount Vernon, Wash.
