U.S. loses Ramos to knee injury

November 27, 1996|By NEW YORK TIMES NEWS SERVICE

Tab Ramos, arguably the most skillful U.S. midfielder, will undergo reconstructive surgery on his left knee and will be lost to the national soccer team for at least four to six months.

A magnetic resonance imaging test showed that Ramos suffered an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in the 79th minute of Sunday's 1-0 World Cup qualifying match at Trinidad and Tobago.

Ramos is certain to miss the rest of this World Cup qualifying round and half of the next round, which will start in February.
