Elizabeth L. A. Sweeney, 71, high school English teacher

Elizabeth Lee Andrews Sweeney, who taught English for 27 years, died of a stroke Friday at her Homeland residence. She was 71.

She taught at Seton High School on Charles Street from 1948 to 1956 when she left to raise a family. She returned to Seton in 1970 and retired in 1989. The previous year, Seton merged with Archbishop Keough High School to form Seton Keough.

A lifelong Marylander, the former Elizabeth Andrews was raised in Pikesville and graduated from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg in 1947.

In 1953, she married Robert F. Sweeney, who recently retired as chief judge of the District Court of Maryland.

A Mass of Christian burial was offered Monday.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Robert F. Sweeney Jr. of Parkville; a daughter, Mary Beth Weigel of Burr Ridge, Ill.; two brothers, Thomas Andrews of Munich, Germany, and John M. Andrews of Baltimore; a sister, Ellen Coady of St. Michaels; and six grandchildren.
