Redskins report

November 26, 1996|By Bill Free

Washington quarterbacks coach Cam Cameron, who has had a tremendous amount of influence on Gus Frerotte's emergence this season, will be named coach at Indiana University today, replacing Bill Mallory. Cameron will continue in his duties with the Redskins through the end of the season before assuming the Indiana job full time.

Also, Washington announced yesterday it has claimed defensive end Jeff Cross, a 1990 Pro Bowler with the Miami Dolphins, off waivers and placed center Cory Raymer on injured reserve.

Cross, 6 feet 4, 280, is in his ninth NFL season and was released by the Dolphins last Friday. He was placed on the Dolphins' physically-unable-to-perform list with a back injury during training camp. He was activated a week ago but lasted only three days.

In his first eight seasons with Miami, Cross started 91 of 109 games and had 405 tackles and 59.5 sacks. The latter is fourth all time in Dolphins history.

PTC Cross was signed as insurance for a defensive line that has become banged up in recent weeks. Sterling Palmer, Marc Boutte and Tony Woods have all missed games, and Palmer still is nursing a sore knee.

Redskins coach Norv Turner said the team brought in some free-agent punters for tryouts yesterday in case Matt Turk (sprained back) couldn't play Thursday, but the team had signed no one as of last night.

Next game: Washington (8-4) travels to Dallas (7-5) for an important NFC East matchup. The Redskins are 0-4 in Thanksgiving Day games against the Cowboys and trail the overall series 39-29-2, but Washington won both games against the Super Bowl champion Cowboys last season. Those two wins gave Turner a 2-2 record against the team with which he spent three seasons as offensive coordinator (1991-93).

What Norv Turner said: "I can never accept losing to the 49ers. I coached too long in California [six years as receivers coach for the Rams] against them not to want to win that game."

Injuries: Starting strong safety Darryl Morrison underwent an MRI yesterday to determine the extent of a neck injury. Morrison is listed as questionable. Turk, however, is expected to play.
