Four people were injured yesterday when a car veered off a road near Clarksville and hit a pickup truck on the road's shoulder, Howard County police said.

The accident occurred about 8 a.m. on Route 32 west of Linden Church Road when a 1991 Chevrolet driven by William Moore Jr. of the 3000 block of Ponder Road in Edgewater struck a 1995 Ford truck, a police report said.

Moore was taken by helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was listed in serious condition. The other men were taken to Howard County General Hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries and released.

Dusty Shifflett of the 3000 block of Fontron block in Edgewater and Jonathan Downs of the 500 block of Chesapeake Ave. in Annapolis were in the truck when it was hit.

"There's no way that we could have seen him coming," Shifflett said.

Another man, Stephen Seen of the 900 block of Mount Airy Road in Davidsonville, was standing outside the road's guardrail at the time of the crash, Howard County police said.

Howard County police are investigating the accident.
