1996 All-Howard County football teams

Coach of the Year

Doug DuVall, Wilde Lake: He didn't get the 200th win and fifth state title he'd hoped for, but his team (10-1) won the county title for the 14th time and was undefeated until losing to Middletown, 24-14, in the state quarterfinals. DuVall started to build this team's foundation three years ago, when Wilde Lake was the county's smallest school. The next two seasons, the team gradually blossomed during difficult nomad years at River Hill while Wilde Lake was rebuilt. Homecoming this season was a relief. "It made a huge difference," DuVall said. "Going 10-0 is almost fairy-tale stuff after all the kids went through at River Hill. Winning the playoffs would have just been icing on the cake." The team scored 386 points and gave up only 68 points. And now that Wilde Lake's the county's biggest school, headed to Class 3A next fall, the promise exists for many more county championships. In his 23 years at Wilde Lake, DuVall's teams have won 197 games.
