A one-car accident at Route 108 and Byefield Road in Highland left a man trapped in his car for 45 minutes Monday, a spokesman for the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue said yesterday.

George Schaefer, 62, of Silver Spring is believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel while driving along Route 108 about 10: 45 a.m., said Lt. David Carroll, a Fire and Rescue spokesman.

Schaefer's late model Nissan Maxima hit a telephone pole, snapped it in two, then continued into the woods, Carroll said.

Schaefer was taken by ambulance to Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. He was in stable condition yesterday with a broken leg, a hospital spokesman said.
