Anne Arundel County deputy sheriffs arrested 22 men in raids throughout the county yesterday on deadbeat-dad charges. The men were charged with being a total of more than $88,200 in arrears in child support payments, deputies said.

The raids began about 3 a.m. and continued until 11 a.m. Among those arrested was a man charged with being $11,209 behind in child support payments, three charged with owing more than $7,000 each and four charged with owing more than $6,000 each, according to the sheriff's department.

Sheriff George F. Johnson IV said yesterday that the arrests were part of an annual sweep conducted with the Northeast Sheriffs Association in states throughout the Northeast.

"We usually do it around this time of year, around the holiday season, to try to generate some money coming back into these houses," he said.

The men were taken to the Anne Arundel Detention Center, where they will remain until they make "purge payments," minimum payments toward the amounts they owe, he said. The payments are set by a District Court judge, who bases the sum partly on the amount in arrears.

The purge payments, which go to the county domestic relations division, would total more than $18,925, including $4,225 from one parent. Most of the money would be sent to custodial parents after a hearing.

Johnson said his agency, which arrests about 900 parents annually for failing to pay child support, wants to hold parents responsible for their children.

"We need to make people aware that we're going to be persistent in our approach to get them to pay their child support," Johnson said. "We're going to get these people to live up to their obligations."
