Coach of the Year

Ralph Luce, Arundel: Luce, in his 19th year at the helm of the Wildcats, watched his team pull off an unexpected sweep of the boys and girls team titles at this year Anne Arundel County Championships at Annapolis. "It's not very often that anyone, other than Severna Park, wins both the boys and girls cross country titles," said Luce, who gives much of the credit to his assistant coach, Don Higdon. "I've never had a team that was as together as this team. There was absolutely no 'I' on either team, just 'us' and that is what makes this year the best one yet." The Wildcats boys team went on to win the Class 4A East region crown but the girls team fell by a point to the Falcons. At the state meet, Arundel's teams posted the county's best finishes with the girls finishing third and the boys claiming fifth. "It [the county sweep] was great for the school and great for the kids," said Luce. "At the beginning of the year, I said the guys were a given to win counties and they were, but I didn't realize how good the girls were until after our first race. Then I knew they could run with anyone."
