Greater Odenton association to discuss housing initiative

GREATER ODENTON Improvement Association will conduct board elections and learn about a plan to privatize family housing at Fort Meade during its meeting tomorrow.

The housing initiative is a proposal by the Department of the Army to obtain high-quality living quarters on the base to replace 25 units at Meade Heights.

The plan would include the transfer of 200 acres, including Meade Heights, to private ownership for the development of a community serving citizens 55 and older.

Sandy Speer, the county's demographer, will outline growth patterns and forecast development of the Greater Odenton area.

Members also will vote to fill three seats on the board of directors.

The 7: 30 p.m. meeting will be at at the Odenton Volunteer Fire Hall on Route 175.

Making wreaths

The Flower and Herb Guild of the O'Malley Senior Center will meet from 12: 30 p.m. to 2: 30 p.m, tomorrow to make holiday wreaths from fresh greens.

Marion Adams of Gambrills Nursery will give pointers and provide supplies. The guild makes wreaths every November to decorate the senior center for the holidays.

Registration is required. Participants are asked to bring wire snips and pruning shears. Adams also will take registration and orders for supplies for a December workshop at which participants will make holiday arrangements for their own use.

American Legion dinner

American Legion Post 276 will serve up steak night from 6: 30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.

The post commander will cook your steak to order. The cost is $6.95, which includes New York strip steak, baked potato and salad. The band Southbound will perform from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

The post is on Quarterfield Road in Severn.

Kiwanis bake sale

The Kiwanis Club of Odenton will have a bake sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday at the Odenton Super Fresh. Proceeds will help pay for the club's youth and community service projects.

Book fair

Odenton Elementary School is having a book fair through Nov. 26.

Students can browse and buy books during school hours from 9: 30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday or from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. Parents can make purchases Nov. 25-26 during parent conferences.

Chamber of Commerce

The West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce will have a reception for legislators and their aides from 5: 30 p.m. to 7: 30 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Piney Orchard Visitors Center, 2400 Stream Valley Drive in Odenton.

Invited guests include Gov. Parris N. Glendening, Sen. Paul S. Sarbanes and Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, County Executive John G. Gary, congressmen in Districts 1, 3 and 5, state delegates and senators in Districts 32 and 33 and County Council members.

Corporate sponsors for the reception are Rose Hill, Constellation Real Estate Inc. and Bell Atlantic-Md. The cost is $10.
