Howard hands Morgan sixth straight loss, 49-0 Bison QB White passes for 6 TDs in MEAC win

WASHINGTON -- Call it a tale of two quarterbacks. There was Howard University sophomore Ted "Sweet Flight" White tying a school record for the second time this season with six touchdown passes. And there was Morgan State senior Otis Covington, who spent much of yesterday afternoon scraping himself off the Greene Stadium artificial surface.

Call it a tale of two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference football teams heading in opposite directions. Howard (8-2, 5-1), with a 49-0 victory over Morgan, recorded its sixth straight one-sided .. decision and probably secured a New Year's Eve date with Southern in the Heritage Bowl in Atlanta. Morgan (3-7, 1-5), loser of six straight by a combined 291-56, will end its season Saturday at home with Hampton University.

Call Morgan's first possession a microcosm of its season: a fast start followed by a slide. The Bears took five plays to march from their 23 to the Bison 13. One penalty and two sacks of Covington left Morgan with fourth-and-29 at the 32. Punter Shane Griffiths bobbled a bouncing snap, and his running kick netted 5 yards. The Bears never threatened to score again.

Covington was sacked 14 times for losses of 90 yards in the game, making it 36 sacks in three games. "I'm a little tired of hitting the ground," Covington said . "It's definitely out of my hands. When we have protection, we can play. When we have time, we can move the ball. Look at White. He had plenty of time back there."

Covington completed 15 of 19 passes for 117 yards. "It's simple. The pass blocking broke down," said Morgan coach Stump Mitchell. "The offensive line is not doing its job, the running backs are not doing their job and a couple of times [Covington] just held on too long."

In the meantime, White, who extended his conference record to 33 touchdown passes this season, completed 12 of 26 for 239 yards. His 4-yard scoring strike to tight end Leonard Stevens capped a four-play, 58-yard drive on its second possession. With Jason DeCuir's kick, Howard led 7-0 with 2: 46 left in the first period.

White hit Marco Ward with a 59-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-0 with 10: 10 remaining in the second quarter. A 2-yard toss to Stevens with 4: 24 left in the first half and a 50-yard pass to Darian Harris with 1: 27 to go gave the Bison a 28-0 lead at halftime.

White's "a good quarterback, but we gave him a lot," said Morgan defensive end Willie Thompson. "We didn't play defense. We broke down on a lot of coverages."

White threw 27 yards to Ayub Abdullah and 19 yards to Harris for third-quarter touchdowns and a 42-0 lead. Mike Richardson, who led all rushers with 75 yards on eight carries, ran in from 12 yards to finish the scoring with 2: 08 to play.
