Shut down in 2nd half, Hickey drops 35-6 decision Cambridge-S. Dorcester puts clamps on Bears

CAMBRIDGE -- The second half was deja vu for Hickey.

After trailing just 7-6 at halftime to Cambridge-South Dorchester, the seventh-seeded Bears watched the second-seeded Vikings score 28 unanswered points, as Hickey fell, 35-6, in a Class 1A quarterfinal playoff game last night.

Hickey (8-2) rushed for 109 yards in the first half behind backs Tyrell Henderson and David Walters.

Henderson ran for 52 yards on nine carries and Walters churned out 58 yards on just five attempts.

Walters' 11th touchdown of the season, a 1-yard scoring run around left end, trimmed Hickey's deficit to 7-6 with 3: 39 left in the second quarter.

Quarterback Todd Turner's two-point pass to tight end Andre Harris was tipped and fell incomplete.

"We were very proud of our program," said Jerry Phipps, Hickey athletic director. "We've won 15 regular-season games in two years, and we're the new kids on the block. We have no feeder system, and we feel like we're building history."

Like the Bears' quarterfinal game last year, Hickey could not get going offensively in the second half. Cambridge-SD, the defending Class 1A state champ, held Hickey to minus-10 yards rushing in the second half and minus-5 yards in total offense in the second half.

Hickey gained only one first down in the second half and had just 23 offensive plays.

Cambridge-SD scored 14 points off two straight Hickey turnovers in the fourth quarter. Turner lost a fumble on an option play and Cambridge-SD's Darnell Dennis (163 yards, three touchdowns) scored three plays later. On the following possession, Turner was intercepted by Dennis on Hickey's first play and Dennis scored two plays later.

Cambridge-SD advances to the state semifinals to face the winner of today's Elkton-Westmar game. The Vikings went 10-0 this regular season, after posting a 9-1 mark last season en route to a state championship.
