Ellicott City's Long Gate Center is inching toward full occupancy with the opening today of a Safeway superstore.

The 55,000-square-foot grocery -- which will be open 24 hours a day -- will have a full line of service departments, including a deli, bakery, fresh seafood and pharmacy, store officials said.

The Long Gate Center, near the intersection of U.S. 29 and Route 100, is Ellicott City's first retail "power center" featuring such big-box tenants as a 116,000-square-foot Target discount store and a 15,000-square-foot liquor store.

There are two other power centers in Howard County -- Snowden Square and Columbia Crossing, both in east Columbia.

Besides Safeway, the Long Gate Center will feature a Homeplace furnishings store, a Kohl's department store, a Barnes and Noble bookstore and MJ Designs.

An Outback Steak House, a Carraba's Italian Grill restaurant and a Mobil gas station are also leasing 5,000-square-foot lots around the retail complex. The center began opening in phases last month.
