A senior, and the defending Howard County champion, Olenick was the lone local runner to take first place last week in the state cross country championships. The Centennial runner covered the 3.1-mile course in 16: 52, nine seconds ahead of the nearest competitor.

St. Paul's

The senior midfielder led the Gators to the Association of Independent Schools A Division championship by scoring in tTC regulation and in a shootout in a 2-1 semifinal win over Bryn Mawr. She then added an assist as St. Paul's stopped Roland Park, 2-0, for the league title.

Jason Wingeart

Hereford

football

The junior halfback rushed seven times for 181 yards and two touchdowns and returned two interceptions for 37 yards as the Bulls beat Catonsville (41-14) for their first 10-0 season, and the top seed in the Class 1A playoffs. Wingeart played for the Hereford soccer team before this season.

At the end of the school year, each player chosen as an Athlete of the Week will be invited to a luncheon Monday, June 9, 1997 at the Towson Sheraton, where one male and one female Athlete of the Year will be chosen.
