25 years ago (weeks of Oct. 31-Nov. 13, 1971):

The Columbia Association proposed a before- and after-school day care program to the Board of Education to be held at Columbia elementary schools. CA offered to assume all legal responsibility for the program, deemed necessary because of the large number of working parents in Columbia.

The Columbia Youth Service Organization, also known as Hire-A-Teen, announced that it was suspending operations due to the "lack of interest and cooperation in the community."

50 years ago (week of Nov. 3-9, 1946):

Representatives of the Howard County Volunteer Firemen's Association met with the county commissioners to ask for an increase in appropriations from the county.
