Dodgers: Agreed to two-year contract with P Mark Guthrie.

Mariners: Named Mike Goff minor-league field coordinator and Roger Hansen roving catching instructor; announced Ron Romanick will return as minor-league pitching coordinator.

Pirates: Named Tracy Woodson batting coach for Double-A Carolina.


Northwestern: Suspended basketball G Geno Carlisle for two exhibitions and one regular-season game for violating team rules.


Bears: Signed LB Dana Howard to one-year contract.

Bucs: Signed CB Charles Anthony to practice squad.

Cardinals: Released WR Kevin Knox from practice squad. Signed WR Michael Watkins to practice squad.

Arena League: Announced awarding of franchise to New York (New York City Hawks) and will start play in April 1997. New York named Larry Kuharich coach and John Gutekunst director of operations and signed QB Troy Kopp. Also signed RB Siran Stacy to a letter of intent.


NHL: Fined Canucks' Pavel Bure and Flames' Todd Simpson $1,000 each for two separate fights between them in a game last week.

Blues: Recalled RW Rob Pearson from loan to AHL Worcester.

Capitals: Assigned G Marc Seliger to ECHL Hampton Roads.

Lightning: Announced G Daren Puppa will miss two more weeks with a groin strain. He has missed 12 games.

Maple Leafs: Recalled RW Wayne Presley from loan to AHL St. John's.

Panthers: Assigned LW Chad Cabana from CHL Port Huron to AHL Carolina.

Sharks: Assigned LW Dody Wood to IHL Kansas City.

Binghamton (AHL): Released G Steve Vezina.


Hershey (A-League): Named Todd Smith general manager. Announced nickname is Wildcats.
