November 05, 1996

A Lincoln Heights man attacked Sunday in his back yard was rescued when his dog drove off the intruder.

A man struck Anthony L. Gardner, 28, in the back of the head about 8: 30 p.m. when he went out to chain his dog at his home in the unit block of Lincoln Parkway, county police said.

Gardner fell to the ground and saw his attacker approaching as if to hit him again. The dog attacked the man and Gardner ran into the house, police said.

Gardner heard the man yell for him to call off his dog, but when he went out, the man had fled, leaving a torn black shirt, police said.
