Kittamaqundi shores are to be shored up

Coming to the shores of Lake Kittamaqundi: a $400,000 renovation.

For 25 years, the banks of the man-made lake in the middle of Columbia have been slowly eroding. The Columbia Association (CA) will spend $300,000 to repair the banks and build a wooden walkway along the shore.

CA, the homeowners' association that manages Columbia park space and recreation facilities, also will spend $100,000 for other work, including reinforcement of the lake's bell tower.

CA's yearly budget is about $38 million.

As part of the lakefront renovation, workers have placed an orange fence along the banks. Two Columbia residents recently mistakingly concluded that the fence was there to keep troublesome geese from walking up the banks toward the restaurants, said Pam Mack, a CA spokeswoman.

"That's too bad. That's really not attractive," one man said to the other, according to Mack, who was nearby.

"I guess the dog didn't work," the other said.

Actually, the dog hasn't had a chance to work, as Mack informed the pair. In the spring, CA intends to use a trained border collie to chase the geese back to the water.
